CATIA is a popular CAD system in the market. CATIA is widely used across multiple industries like automotive, aerospace, consumer goods etc. Here is the collection of various tips and frequently asked questions on CATIA

CATIA V5 Tips & Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Expand CATIA
    • Computer Aided Three Dimensional Interactive Applications
  • File Extensions for CATIA V5 Part, Product & Drawing?
    • CATIA Part – CATPart
    • CATIA Assembly – CATProduct
    • CATIA Drawing – CATDrawing
  • How do you increase the size of 3D Plane boundary representation in CATIA?.
    • CATIA Menu, Tools → Options → Infrastructure → Part Infrastructure → Display → Asis System display size (in mm)
  • Role of CATIA Sketcher Workbench
    • Used to create the base CATIA 2D geometry shapes for creating CATIA 3D parts or surfaces
  • What is the use of construction elements?
    • Construction elements assists in sketching the required profile in CATIA Sketcher workbench by providing the reference geometry.
  • What are the default units of LMT (Length, Mass and Time) in CATIA?
    • MKS – MM, KG & Second.
  • What are Sketch Tools in CATIA Sketcher workbench & Explain the Importance of it?
    • Sketch Tools in CATIA Sketcher workbench are the commands / toggle switches, enables the end user to create CATIA Geometrical and Dimensional Constraints
    • Sketch Tools in CATIA Sketcher workbench also allows end user to toggles geometrical elements between construction and actual geometry
  • Toggle the CATIA Specification Tree
    • Use F3 key or use View → Specification Tree
  • What is the CATIA Show/Hide option?
    • Show mode enables us to see CATIA geometry features currently opened, and Hide       mode temporarily hides CATIA geometry elements. Use CATIA Swap Visible space command to swap between Hide / Show CATIA geometric elements
  • What is the use of Cut Part by Sketch Plane in CATIA Sketcher workbench?
    • The CATIA cut part by sketch plane option shows how to make some edges visible to be used for referencing CATIA geometry.  We are going to simplify the CATIA sketch plane by hiding the portion of the material that is not needed for sketching, providing better visibility on the cross section.
  • What do you mean by ISO-Constraints in CATIA?
    • If all degrees of freedom of CATIA geometry have been arrested by a consistent combination of dimensions & fixed geometry, it is said to be ISO-CONSTRAINED.  CATIA Sketcher geometry that still has some degrees of freedom is said to be UNDER constrained.
  • Mention the color code of ISO-constrained, under, and over constrained elements in CATIA Sketcher?
    • The CATIA color code for Iso-constrained elements is Green, under constrained elements is White and over constrained elements is Magenta respectively.
  • What is the use of the CATIA Animated Constraint command?
    • The CATIA Animate Constraint command shows how constrained sketched elements react when we decide to vary one constraint
  • List CATIA Coordinate systems
    • CATIA coordinate systems are Cartesian, Polar and Spherical
  • What is the use of CATIA Sketch Analysis?
    • To check whether CATIA Sketch is fully closed, or if there are any non-manifold profiles.
  • What does CATIA P1, CATIA P2 AND CATIA P3 mean?
    • CATIA P1, CATIA P2 and CATIA P3 will indicate the different types of platforms of CATIA. P1 is the lower platform and P3 is the higher platform available in CATIA
  • What is CATIA Power Copy?  Explain.
    • CATIA Power Copy is a set of features that are associatively grouped under to be used in different CATIA geometry contexts & having the capability to adapt changes when pasted.
  • Differences between CATIA File → New and New From?
    • If you save an existing CATIA file in another directory without changing the file name, you will only be able to open one of these CATIA files at any given time. If one of them is already open you will not be able to open others. This is because both CATIA files have the same Universal unique Identifier (UUID).
    • To avoid this happening each CATIA file must have it’s own UUID. This can be done by means of CATIA File → New From.
    • To create a new CATIA document whose basic properties are the same as an existing CATIA document, close the CATIA document you want to copy if not closed. Select CATIA menu File → New From, After selecting the existing document from which you want to create a new CATIA file and Click open. An exact copy of the existing CATIA document is displayed with a default name. The only difference between this CATIA document and an already existing one is that the new CATIA document is created with the new UUID by CATIA File → New From option.
  • Difference CATIA Spline and Spine?
    • CATIA Spine: Creates a curve passing through a point on a plane  and normal to one or more other CATIA planes.
    • CATIA Spline: Creates A Curve passing through several points having tangential curvature continuity.
  • Difference CATIA Paste and Paste Special
    • CATIA Paste: Option in CATIA contextual menus enable us to simply copy and paste CATIA geometry from source to destination CATIA geometry containers
    • CATIA Paste Special: Option in CATIA contextual menus enable us to maintain link or isolate links with source geometry.
  • What is the CATIA Design table?
    • CATIA Design Tables helps end users create  and manage component families. These components can be for example mechanical standard parts like fasteners whose shape is same and sizes are different
  • How do you clean up CATIA V5 files?
    • CATIA Menu, File → Desk → CATDUA → Check / Clean.
  • How do you convert from CATIA V4 to CATIA V5?
    • CATIA Menu, Tools → Utility → Migrate V4 to V5
  • How do you convert CATIA higher version files to lower version?
    • CATIA Menu, Tools → Utility → Downward Compatibility

CATIA Training from PLM Coach

🎓 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA Fundamentals Training (URL:

3DEXPERIENCE CATIA Fundamentals training course will teach you how to create simple parts, assemblies and drawings. You will gain an understanding of how to use different feature-based tools to build, review and modify a model. Gain understanding of how to create and analyze assemblies and how to produce a drawing with different views. Finally, you will understand how to dimension the drawing and annotate the views on 3DEXPERIENCE platform
